The Diablo Light Opera Company will present that spectacular
and lavish musical Kismet May 14 - June 19,
1999 at the Dean Lesher Center for the Performing Arts, Walnut
Creek. Kismet was adapted from a 1911 play by
Edward Knoblock and the music was adapted from themes composed
by Alexander Borodin. It opened on Broadway in 1953 and made
into a film in 1955. The music includes "Stranger in Paradise",
"And This is My Beloved", "Rhymes Have I" and "Baubles, Bangles
and Beads".
The story takes place within a 24-hour period from dawn to
dawn in ancient Baghdad, where a quick-witted public poet
assumes the identity of Hajj, the beggar. His day is absolutely
filled with adventure and by the time it has ended, he has
seen his daughter Marsinah wedded to the handsome Caliph,
he has managed to drown the scheming Wazir, he has been appointed
Emir of Baghdad and gone off into the desert with the Wazir's
luscious wife, Lalume.
