‘Impossible Dream’ a Reality
DLOC Brings Legendary Musical ‘Man of La Mancha’ to Walnut Creek for 19 Performances, Opening Feb. 15
“Man of La Mancha,” one of Broadway’s most enduring musicals with a score that includes the immortal “The Impossible Dream,” will be presented by the Diablo Light Opera Company in 19 performances beginning Feb. 15 and continuing through March 16 in Walnut Creek.
The performances will be in the Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Drive, where tickets ($28-$40) on sale at (925) 943-7469 or online at www.dlrca.org
As an extension of the Valentines Day celebration, a reception with chocolates and champagne will follow performances on Feb. 15 and 16.
A talented cast of 17 will enact the story of the classic novel “ Don Quixote” as a play within a play, performed by Miguel de Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition.
Paul Myrvold stars as Miguel de Cervantes/Don Quixote, the role that earned Richard Kiley a Tony Award in the Broadway production in 1965. The show itself was awarded a Tony for best musical.
This will mark the seventh time Myrvold, whose credits include appearances off-Broadway, and on-Broadway in “Shenandoah,” has played the lead role. His most recent performance in the role was in a production by The Western Stage, the Salinas Valley’s public theater in 2002.
Melinda Meeng, whose last appearance with DLOC was in “The King and I” in 2004, will play Aldonza. She has performed with Center Repertory Company, 42nd Street Moon, and The Willows Theatre Company. Her performance in Contra Costa Musical Theatre’s production of “South Pacific” earned her a Shellie Award in 2006.
The role of Sancho will be played by Robert Ponce, who has performed with numerous companies during a career spanning more than 35 years. He is also a costume designer.
Dianna Shuster, former artistic director of American Musical Theatre of San Jose and Music Theatre of Oregon, directs the show. She previously directed DLOC’s production of “My Fair Lady.”
Daren A. C. Carollo, DLOC’s executive producer, is the show’s producer. Cheryl Yee Glass will conduct the orchestra. The choreographer is Suzanne Brandt. Chad Runyon is the vocal director.
Following the Walnut Creek engagement, “Man of La Mancha” will presented at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on March 29 and 2 p.m. March 30 at the El Campanil Theatre in Antioch. Tickets ($27-$30) are on sale at the box office at 602 W. Second Sreet, (925) 757-9500 and online at www.elcampaniltheatre.com
