"Ragtime" Sweeps the Shellies With Best Musical, 5 Other Awards

DLOC's widely acclaimed production of "Ragtime" was named the most outstanding musical of 2003 at the 25th annual Shellies Awards. The show earned five other top awards, the most for a single company.

As cast and board members, joined by other supporters at the black-tie event cheered, the other five Shellies were awarded to:

  • James Monroe Iglehart, outstanding actor in a musical. He played Coalhouse.
  • Jonie DeGabriele, outstanding actress in a musical, for her performance as Mother.
  • Andrea Danielle, outstanding supporting actress in a musical, for her portrayal of Sarah.
  • Mike Dederian, outstanding supporting actor in a musical. He played Tateh.
  • Sue Ellen Nelson, outstanding direction of a musical.

The outstanding-musical award was accepted on stage by Alice Gracer, producer-in -training, who worked with producer Grete Egan on the show. It has also been recognized as the best musical of 2003 in the Bay Area.

Among the nominees for other shows was Keith Barlow, who performed a number from "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," in which he starred for Antioch Rivertown Players. Barlow is general manager of DLOC.
